Avoiding the Major Mistake New Entrepreneurs Make

While discussing with Boss Chic Kimberly Alexander some lessons learned on her entrepreneurial journey (in Season One, Episode 3 of my podcast, "The Aliah Henry Show"), the owner of boutique consulting firm KimCONNECTS shared some great advice for new entrepreneurs: think long-term.

Kimberly Alexander - CEO, KimCONNECTS

Based on the insights Kim offered the audience, here are some key points you should keep in mind when attempting to think long-term as a brand new entrepreneur:

(1) Think about what you want people to think when they see your business.

(2) Be strategic about what you name your business.

(3) Take incredible photos.

(4) Don't hesitate to invest in stepping your game up.

Kim started her entrepreneurial journey a little over twenty years designing her own bling'd out t-shirts to wear on game days as an NFL wife. "I take the lessons that I learned then," she stated, "and apply them to what I'm doing now." Of course, things were much different at that time because social media was in its infancy and nowhere near as dominant a force as it is today. "Like back then, social media didn't exist," Kim exclaimed. "And so now, it is such a game-changer; and it can really make or break a business. So, it's one of the things that I really try to stress to people."

During our conversation, Kim shared about a recent meeting with a young woman who wanted to talk about marketing her own business. The first thing Kim then does is look at her Instagram profile; and to her surprise, what she saw was not what she heard.

"I'm like, 'Wait a minute! You're telling me what you do. But I'm looking at your photos and your bio, and I don't get that at all."

She advised the budding entrepreneur to change things up and be clearer about what it is that she wanted to do and what type of clientele she was trying to attract. Clearly communicating that on social media would consequently make it easier for people to find her on there. When it comes to brand recognition and marketing products/services, social media has taken such a huge place in people's mindsets.

According to findings shared by Hootsuite, the global leader in social media management, there are 3.48 billion active social media users worldwide, which equates to about 45% of the world population. And digital consumers are spending nearly 2.5 hours a day on social networks and social messaging platforms. So in thinking long-term as a new entrepreneur, you cannot afford to be haphazard in how you present yourself on social media in today's digital marketplace.

If you are looking to make better use of social media to market and promote what you're doing, then I invite you to join my private Facebook group ("Social Savvy with Aliah Henry").
